Pop star Chapel Roan talked about mental health, falling in love and more during a Grammy Museum event Thursday night. In conversation with musician Brandi Carlile, the 26-year-old singer and producer Daniel Nigro detailed the creation of several songs from her hit album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess. The intimate event is part of the museum's Spotlight series.

Roan told the crowd why it took her and Nigro so many years to complete her debut album, "It took so many years to explain to people." Roan's album, which spent 32 weeks on the Billboard 200 chart, was scheduled to be released in September 2023 but took five years to complete. "I had no money. I had no numbers. I had an EP that didn't do well by musical standards. I toured, but it didn't make any headlines," he said.

"I didn't have any help." "Pink Pony Club," one of Roan's biggest hits of the year, was one of the first songs he and Nigro worked on together. It was released in January. "It was the worst time for the national anthem to be released in the club," Roan said, which made the crowd laugh. The singer said the song was a “complete 180” for her and how she dressed and performed at the time. “I only wear black on stage. It was great,” she said. “The moment I didn’t take myself seriously, that’s when things started to fall into place.

“I can’t be here all the time. It’s too much,” Roan said. She previously spoke about her rapid fame and how it affected her. When asked about her mental health routine, the singer said it has changed, honestly sharing how her recent success has changed things. “My life is completely different now. Everything is a mess now,'' she said.

“A year like this definitely throws people off. Everything that happens big in someone’s career happens to me in five months,” the singer said. "It's so weird that things I never thought would happen happen 10 times. I think it's shaken up my system. I don't know what a good mental health routine looks like for me at this point."

Roan also spoke candidly about falling in love. Her song "Kaleidoscope," specifically requested by Carlile, tells the story of falling in love with one of her best friends. According to the singer, it's a real situation for her. "I think it's specific to lesbian relationships because it's about falling in love with a friend," she said, noting that lesbian relationships can often start as friends and evolve.

"[I] told my friend I love her. She said, 'Can you give me a day to think about this?'" Roan explained to the crowd. "The next day I wrote it. I was thinking, 'I'm going to kill myself. I need to do something.'

She said she doesn't regret the experience. "I'm so grateful that it happened because, one, it gave me validation that it wasn't a hoax when he said he was gay," Roan said. "Two, what an incredible person you fell in love with for the first time. Your best friend thought you were talented and funny."

Roan made her Saturday Night Live debut last week, performing "Pink Pony Club" and a new song, "The Giver," during the show's live sketches. Roan, 26, gave the crowd a few hints about "The Giver," a quirky country anthem. "It's gonna come out. It's gonna come out, don't worry," she said, noting how much she enjoys writing songs. "I'll have to bring out what I know because I'm an outdoorsy girl."
